LEBMUN

Letter from the Co-Secretary Generals

Dear advisors, delegates, and esteemed guests,

A wave of nostalgia hits us as we are on the brink of the 20th anniversary of our annual Model United Nations conference, LEBMUN'24, reminding us of the remarkable journey we've undertaken.

Two decades ago, the idea of LEBMUN was born within the four walls of the American Community School Beirut. Since then, our conference has transcended those initial boundaries, evolving its location from the American University of Beirut to finding its prestigious home at UN-ESCWA, the UN House in Beirut. Our current partnership with the official UN House is a testament to the unwavering professionalism that is ingrained in our conference values.

Our first ever online conference LEBMUN'21 was born during the pandemic, in a time of unprecedented challenges. This rendition showcased our resilience and adaptability, demonstrating that our conference not only endures but flourishes in the face of adversity.

Our growth extends beyond physical locations; it manifests in the heart of our outreach program. Witnessing the expansion of Beirut's brightest minds reaching their full potential fills us with pride. The initiation of bringing underprivileged students to our campus, nurturing their understanding of MUN, and ultimately fostering their participation in LEBMUN’22 has been transformative. From a modest start of 15 participants to an impressive count of 50, our outreach efforts reflect a commitment to fulfilling our duty to our community.

The accumulation of decades of experience brings us to where we stand today

As we reflect on how far LEBMUN has come from its humble beginnings, it's heartening to acknowledge that our roots remain firmly entwined with the mission that drives us. We continue to embody the spirit of diplomacy, collaboration and excellence that has always defined LEBMUN. However, we now combine it with the lessons of professionalism, adaptability, and the importance of community since accrued.

In light of the current geopolitical climate, our latest lesson is manifested in our theme — Challenging the Status Quo. We urge delegates to think ever more critically about solutions that work and relentlessly scrap the ones that don't. Delegates should be brave in pursuing ideas that think beyond the confines of existing solutions.

On a closing note, we would love to see your presence at LEBMUN'24, which will take place from February 23-25, 2024 at UN-ESCWA. As per tradition, we accept delegates from all backgrounds grades 6-12. To indicate your interest, kindly fill out our non-binding Form I before December 15, 2023 at 11:59 PM Beirut time.

For any queries, please do not hesitate to reach out to lebmun@acs.edu.lb

Happy 20th anniversary — we look forward to welcoming you at our conference!

With excitement,

Haya Ghazale and Nazokat Makmudova
Co-Secretary Generals of LEBMUN'24

Theme Name: Challenging the Status Quo

“Challenging the Status Quo” is a theme that resonates with the ever-evolving dynamics of our world. In the midst of a shifting political climate, the imperative is to break away from conventional wisdom and explore fresh perspectives. This theme encourages participants to question established norms, scrutinize prevailing narratives, and focus on objective facts. The emphasis lies in fostering an environment where innovative ideas can thrive, paving the way for collaborative solutions. By challenging the status quo, delegates will have the opportunity to instigate a transformative dialogue that transcends routine rhetoric, promoting a deeper understanding of global issues and inspiring a collective journey towards progressive diplomacy.
